Marriage Beyond the Wedding Day: Lessons from a Lagos Roadside Encounter

A while back, I was coming back from Ajao Estate in Lagos State, Nigeria when the Uber driver pointed my attention to a car beside us. He said the man had just hit his wife in the face. When I looked, I saw the woman holding her face as we drove away.
Do you know the saddest part? A child was in the car, watching. The man parked right in the middle of the road, obstructing other cars, and still hit his wife — right there in front of their child. I doubt it was his first time.
Truth is, the woman must have seen the red flags before marriage. Still, as the Uber driver said, some women can frustrate their husbands — but that’s never an excuse to hit your wife, especially before your child. Imagine the kind of image being formed in that child’s mind.
Just as I was telling my colleagues at work, it’s not every man you can submit to as a husband figure. Some men are not even fit to be husbands, let alone fathers.
We now live in times where marriage is no longer seen as sacred. Many people look forward to the wedding — the photos, the celebration, the gown — but not the marriage itself. They want to take a lifelong walk with someone who will give them sleepless nights and tear-soaked pillows.
Some married people are silently crying to be free, while some single people are too anxious to be married.
