The Power of Words: How What You Say Shapes Your Life

“Speak life, even when life seems hard” - Olaseinde Tobiloba Damilare

Some people pray and at the same time speak curses, yet they expect to see better results. How? It is like pouring water into a basket. The Bible asks, “Can a spring produce fresh water and bitter water at the same time?” (James 3:11).

My pastor once shared a personal story. He said he was a rebellious young man. His mother was a praying woman, but she also used to curse him, while still expecting him to change. How could change happen under such conditions? He said the day she stopped cursing him and began to speak the Word of God over his life, something shifted. The change was not immediate, but gradually, she began to notice transformation in him.

Our words are powerful. They should be like a balm that heals, not wounds. As Proverbs 12:18 teaches, wise words bring healing. We may face challenges, but we must learn to guard our tongues so our words do not become weapons against others. Let people associate you with words of life, encouragement, and peace.

Environment also plays a role. In the book, 'Atomic Habits', it is explained that we pick up habits from the people around us. If you find yourself in an environment filled with negative speech, consider distancing yourself from it. If leaving immediately is not possible, guard your heart diligently, just as Scripture instructs.

I once had a friend whose words were kind and uplifting. That was one reason I felt close to her. However, after she started attending a certain place, her language changed. She began using harsh and insulting words. She often repeated statements she heard there. Later, when she left that environment, her speech became more careful and gentle again. This shows how strongly environment can influence the way we speak.

Scripture also warns that anyone who claims to be religious but speaks hurtful words deceives themselves. Our words must align with our faith.
The earlier you begin to discipline your speech, the better. My pastor’s wife once shared an experience in Ilorin. She had gone to the hospital to support a woman in labor. Nearby, another woman in pain was cursing her unborn child and the child’s father. Yet the woman she came to support, though also in pain, spoke words of faith. She declared, “I deliver like a Hebrew woman.” She spoke life, strength, and faith over herself and her child. She shaped her reality with her words.

This message reminds me that our world is framed by what we say. Do not dwell on negative words spoken against you. Instead, become the prophet and priest over your own life. Yes, no weapon formed against you shall prosper—but do not form weapons against yourself through your own speech.
Choose words that build, heal, and create life.

Till the next post, keep learning.
